Disability Pride

Disability Pride

July is disability pride month! This month is an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of disabled people and recognize the progress that has been made in disability rights. It is also a time to reflect on the work that still needs to be done in order to achieve full inclusion and equity for disabled people. This includes fighting for better access to healthcare, employment opportunities, and housing. It also involves raising awareness and educating the public about the importance of recognizing and respecting the rights of disabled people.

In 1990, President George H.W. Bush signed into law the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA). In celebration of the law's passage, Boston hosted its first-ever Disability Pride parade in the same year. The parade was attended by over 10,000 people and was a landmark event for disability rights activists. It marked the beginning of the Disability Rights Movement in the United States and has been held annually in Boston ever since. The ADA has been instrumental in protecting the rights of people with disabilities and providing them with equal access to public services and accommodations. Disability Pride serves as an important symbol of the movement, uniting people with disabilities and allies in celebration of their shared rights and freedoms.
