Bollards and Security Posts FAQs
What material are bollards and security posts made from?
All of our bollards and security posts are produced from steel to ensure they are durable, heavy duty and long lasting.
What are folding bollards use for?
Folding bollards are generally used to prevent unauthorised vehicles from parking in a designated area such as a parking bay, loading bay or driveway. The bollard can simply be lifted up and locked into place using the key provided to prevent others from being able to move the bollard and drive into the parking bay. Folding bollards are also coming increasingly popular as a method to deter car thieves. When parked the bollards are put in the upright position to prevent car thieves from simply being able to drive the car off of the premises.
What is the difference between Telescopic Bollards and Folding Bollards?
The Folding Bollards are mounted onto the ground and simply found so they are always visible. The base of Telescopic Bollards is located under the surface of the ground, the bollard is then simply pulled up when required. They are often preferable for businesses seeking to maintain a professional forecourt image whilst ensuring security can be maintained.
How easy is it to install a bollard?
The folding and fixed bollards are the easiest to install as they are provided with pre-drilled fixing points and fixings so you simply need to drill into the ground and secure into place, installation usually takes under 30 minutes. The telescopic and removable bollards require more work as you need to secure the base into the ground so generally the work is undertaken by a builder.
How easy is it to remove a bollard?
Produced from steel, the bollards are designed to be heavy duty so they are difficult to vandalise. They can of course be removed when needed, for example the folding bollards can be unscrewed from their position.
What is the purpose of fixed bollards?
Fixed bollards are generally designed to alert users to when they are approaching the end of a parking bay, in turn protecting surrounding structures and pedestrians. They can also be secured onto the pavement to prevent vehicles mounting the kerb in error and are a popular choice in retail parks, business parks and residential areas.
Where should bollards not be installed?
It is important that bollards do not restrict pedestrian movement. For example, if you are installing bollards on a pavement it is important to consider the remaining useable width of the pavement will be wide enough for access required by pedestrians, wheelchairs and pushchairs. Bollards should also not block fire exits or emergency routes.
Do I require permission to install bollards?
When installing bollards you will need permission from the landowner, such as your landlord or the council. Generally you do not need planning permission to install bollards however, if the bollards are being installed on a listed property or conservation area permission should be sought. If installing bollards on public land it is likely you will need to seek permission, we would suggest contacting your council regarding this. You will also need to review the guidelines around bollards which are set out by the Department of Transport. The guidelines provide recommendations including the required distance required between the bollards.
