Half Steps FAQs

What is a half step?

A half step, also know as a mobility step or step stool, is a type of walking aid designed to reduce the distance between the ground and a step or doorway. Reducing the height difference makes it easier for users to overcome the step and can reduce the risk of slips and falls.

Who can benefit from a half step?

Half steps are beneficial for anyone who struggles to overcome steps and doorways. They are commonly used by elderly people, who are generally at a higher risk of falls; those who suffer from conditions such as sciatica and arthritis, which can make lifting their legs painful; and those who struggle with their balance due to muscle weakness and joint pain.

Can a half step be used with walking aids such as walking sticks and rollators?

Yes, half steps can be used with walking aids. It is important to check that the size of the half step is suitable for your walking aid. At The Ramp Factory, our standard half steps are designed for users who are walking or using walking aids. The large steps are compatible with walking sticks and walking frames. When using a rollator walker, an extra-large step is recommended.

What is the difference between plastic half steps and metal half steps?

Plastic half steps are generally a lighter, more portable solution and can easily be moved to different locations. They are also usually cheaper than metal half steps. Metal half steps often have a higher weight capacity and are available in a wider range of sizes and designs. Many metal steps are height adjustable, can be secured to the ground for long-term use, and can be purchased with or without handrails.

Can half steps be fixed in place?

Some half steps include a fixing bracket, allowing the step to be secured to the ground. This is beneficial for those who are concerned about the step being stolen, where the step is used in high-traffic areas, or for those seeking additional stability. Some steps are designed to be secured to the ground.

How do you adjust the height of a half step?

Various half steps are height adjustable, allowing you to achieve a comfortable height. It is quick and easy to adjust the height by simply adjusting the feet to your preferred setting.

Can half steps be used on uneven ground?

For stability, half steps should be used on flat ground and should not be used on slopes. Some models, such as the 120mm High Mobility Adjustable Outdoor Half Step and adjustable half steps, include adjustable feet that can be adapted to slightly uneven surfaces.

Can the half step stools be left outside?

Yes, all of our half steps can be left outside.

Do The Ramp Factory offer half steps for bariatric users?

Yes, we suggest viewing our metal and aluminium steps, as these offer weight capacities of up to around 300kg, depending on the product you choose.

Are half steps available on the NHS?

Half steps are considered a minor adaptation and may therefore be provided by the NHS. We recommend speaking to your Occupational Therapist or local council to arrange an assessment. The lead time and type of step you receive may vary depending on your location.

How do I identify what height of half step to purchase?

In general, we recommend choosing a half step that is approximately half the height of your existing step or door threshold. Many of our metal half steps are height adjustable, allowing you to adapt the step to suit your requirements.

Can half steps with handrails work where the door opens outwards?

Yes; however, you would generally choose a half step with a single handrail rather than dual handrails. We recommend checking where the step will be positioned and where the handrail will be located to ensure there is sufficient clearance for the door to open. Depending on your home's layout, it may not be possible to use a half step with handrails where the door opens outwards. In these instances, you may wish to consider installing grab rails instead.

What is the largest half step?

The largest half step measures 1m x 1m, making it ideal for those using rollators, walkers, and tri-walkers.
