Are anti-slip stair treads legally required in the workplace ?
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 requires employers to ensure the health of safety of all employees which includes reducing the risk of slips and trips in the workplace. The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 requires employers to assess risks (including slip and trip risks) and, where necessary, take action to address them. Where steps are likely to become slippery, such as external stairways or internal steps frequently exposed to water or other liquids (common in environments like factories, restaurants, and similar settings), it is often advisable to install anti-slip surfaces. These surfaces significantly enhance safety by reducing the likelihood of slip-related incidents.
