A Guide To Enhance Car Park Safety
It is essential to keep car parks as a safe place for all, ensuring pedestrians can walk safely through the car park whilst ensuring cars can safely drive through without damaging other vehicles or surrounding structures. It is of course also essential they are a safe place and users feel comfortable leaving their cars parked in the area. Whether you manage a car park in a retail area, business park or private residential area, we have a range of car park safety measures available to enhance your car park.
Accidents and thefts in car parks are more common than you think with many having to claim on their car insurance due to dents to their car, either from colliding with obstacles or other cars.
It is important car parks are designed with the users in mind. Car park bays should be clearly drawn out with enough space for the vehicle to allow users to get out of the car without causing damage to other vehicles. Security is also important so lighting and CCTV should be considered, especially in exits and stairwells. Clear signage is vital to prevent accidents occuring. It is recommended markings are placed for pedestrian walkways and clear signs are located on the floor and walls as to the direction vehicles should travel in. Where possible, access should also be controlled with barriers and CCTV. Flow plates can also be used to prevent vehicles traveling in through the exit of the car park.
Why Car Park Safety Matters
Enhancing car park safety is key to ensure safety and provide users with the confidence to return to the car park. Introducing car park measures can:
- Reduce the risk of accidents between vehicles
- Limit damage to surrounding structures such as a walls, fences and EV charging points
- Reduce the risk of collisions between vehicles and pedestrians
- Deter thefts and vandals
At The Ramp People we have a range of measurements available to assist in enhancing car park safety.
Speed Bumps & Warning Signs: Control Vehicle Speed
We offer a range of traffic calming devices including speed bumps, speed cushions and flow plates to slow vehicle speeds and encourage the flow of one way traffic.
Speed Bumps & Speed Bump Warning Signs
Speed bumps are key to slowing down vehicles entering into car parks and, where required, can be used within the car park. It is recommended they are used in conjunction with speed bump signs to clearly alert road users to upcoming speed ramps and the required speed limit.
In general, within car parks the speed limit is 5mph or 10mph.
Flow Plates: Enforce One-Way Traffic
Flow Plates are designed to promote the flow of one way traffic and deter drivers from travelling in the wrong direction, whether this is around the car park or entering the car park via the exit.
Flow Plates
For those seeking to prevent drivers from entering through the car park exit, or for those seeking to ensure the one-way flow of vehicles throughout the car park, flow plates can be the perfect solution.
The standard yellow flow plates can be used to promote the flow of one way traffic and can also be locked in place to allow vehicles to flow in both directions when required. We also offer Directional Flow Plates with sharks teeth to deter vehicles from passing over the flow plates.
Wheel Stops: Protect Car Park Structures
Here at The Ramp Factory we offer a range of rubber wheel stops, security posts and bollards designed to protect surrounding structures including EV charging points, walls and fences.
Parking Stops
Rubber wheel stops / parking blocks are perfect for protecting EV charging points and surrounding structures. They are generally placed at the end of the parking bay to alert users when they are approaching the end of the bay. The rubber wheel stops are easy to install and are provided with fixings for tarmac and concrete.
Security Posts & Folding Bollards: Protect Structures and Pedestrians & Reserve Parking Spaces
Fixed Security Posts can be used to alert drivers to when they are approaching the end of the bay, in turn protecting structures and pedestrians. Folding and Telescopic Bollards are commonly used to allocate parking spaces and prevent unauthorised vehicles from parking in designated bays. They can also be used to protect vehicles from theft.
Security Posts
Security posts are a further way to alert users as to when they are approaching the end of the parking bay. Provided in highly visible yellow, these are generally installed at the side of the parking bay so drivers see them in their mirrors when reversing. They are also often installed on pavements and pedestrian routes to protect pedestrians from reversing vehicles.
Telescopic & Folding Parking Posts and Bollards
Prevent authorised vehicles from parking in designated parking bays with our range of telescopic and folding parking posts. Produced from steel, the heavy-duty bollards are easy to position and secure in place.Bollards are also used to deter vehicle theft.
The Telescopic Bollards have the based secured below the ground meaning they are not highly visible until put into position. It also means that vehicles with low ground clearance can safely pass over the bollards.
