Van Ramps - Ultimate Buying Guide
There are a wide range of van ramps on the market, perfect for all your loading requirements. With such a selection available it can often be difficult to identify the most suitable van ramp for your loading needs which is why we have put together a few handy points to consider when shopping for your perfect ramp.
Firstly it is important to consider what your van loading ramp will be used for. You will need to know:
- The vertical height from the ground to where the ramp will rest on you van, trailer or steps. This is your 'load height'.
- The maximum weight you wish to load, consider the weight of the items you are loading plus yourself if you will be walking on the ramp
- What you plan to load, for example if you wish to load a narrower ramp would be suitable however if you wish to also load trolleys one wide ramp if often required
- Check the width of the item you are loading and the width of the space where the ramp will rest to ensure it will fit in the area
Additional points we recommend considering:
- Always check the weight of the ramp you are purchasing to ensure you will be able to manoeuvre it
- Consider where you wish to store the ramp, if you are storing the ramp in the back of your van you may need a folding solution, as as straight ramp may not fit in your vehicle. If you regularly use the ramp a fixed ramp may be more suitable for your requirements
- Check the clearance of the item you are loading. If you are loading items with low clearance such as cages and pallet trucks you may need a longer ramp
- If you are purchasing a portable ramp, consider how the ramp will rest onto the vehicle. Our standard ramps have a rest on connection which are designed for flat bed vehicles. If you have beaver tail trailer a hook connection may be more suitable. If you are unsure please contact our team or explore our connection options.
- If your van has steps or a tow bar it is important to check the ramp will safely clear this and reach ground level
Finally, we always recommend reading the full product description and contacting our team if you have any questions around suitability, our expert advisors are on hand to help.
What is the recommended slope, or gradient, for van ramps?
For loading goods and equipment a maximum slope of 30% is recommended. Please note, if you wish to items with low clearance such as pallet trucks, or you are seeking a ramp for occupied wheelchairs and mobility scooters, a smooth slope is required.
How do the van ramps stay securely in place during loading?
The ramps have a curved rest on connection which rests onto your vehicle. Our premium van ramps have a pre-drilled hole to allow you to secure the ramp to your vehicle during loading. Our motorcycle loading ramps are provided with safety straps for additional security. The base, or foot, of the ramps are cut at an angle based on the recommended load height. This enures the ramp sits securely on the ground during loading, in turn preventing movement and providing strength to the ramp. The angle of the ramp and ramp weight also assists the ramp to stay in place.
How can I tell if the van ramp is compatible with my vehicle?
Our range of portable van ramps are designed to be used on most vehicles. If you are unsure please send us pictures of your vehicle, including where the ramp will rest, so we can confirm suitability.
Should I purchase one wide ramp for loading a motorbike?
Generally for motorcycles we suggest viewing our motorcycle loading ramps. If you wish to sit on your bike during loading we would suggest viewing our motorcycle ramps kit which comprise of three ramps. This is a lighter solution than one wide van ramp.
If you have any questions please contact our team for advice. Custom ramps are available on request.
