Hand Pallet Truck Maintenance
- In the UK, manual pallet trucks are covered under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER). For pallet trucks that lift loads higher than 300mm (not applicable to The Ramp Factory's range), LOLER also applies.
- Pallet trucks should be subject to regular checks and are often checked daily where they are used in busy warehouses. It is important to check the pallet truck for signs of damage and wear and tear. The controls should be checked along with the forks, wheels and hydraulic function. A pallet truck should not be used if it is damaged. Records should be kept of all checks undertaken.
- Under PUWER, pallet trucks must be inspected by a competent person at suitable intervals. The person should have sufficient knowledge and experience of pallet trucks, in most instances a third party is hired to complete these checks. This may be every 6 months or annually depending on how often the pallet truck is used and company policy. Inspections should also occur if the pallet truck is exposed to risks which may cause deterioration, for example if exposed to chemicals or damage occured.
The Ramp Factory's Manual Pallet Trucks
Ramps for Pallet Trucks
Hand pallet trucks are designed for use on flat, level surfaces. Due to their low ground clearance, they are generally unable to travel over steps, kerbs, raised thresholds, or other changes in floor level.
When choosing a pallet truck, it's important to consider the environment in which it will be used. If your warehouse, loading area, or workplace includes changes in height, access ramps, or uneven transitions, additional equipment may be required to ensure goods can be moved safely and efficiently.
For businesses that need to load and unload pallets from ground-level shipping containers, navigate kerbs, or overcome changes in floor level, a pallet truck ramp can provide a practical solution. These ramps create a smooth transition between surfaces, allowing pallet trucks to move loads safely while reducing the risk of damage to equipment, products, and flooring. It is important to check the ramps gradient is suitable for your pallet truck prior to purchase. If you also have a forklift on site, you may wish to seek ramp which is suitable for both types of machinery.
