The Ultimate Guide to Van Ramps: Loading with Confidence in 2026
Van Loading Ramp Guide
Safely loading equipment, goods and trolleys in and out of vans is essential to prevent injuries to users and prevent damage to the goods.
With many options available on the market, it can often be hard to understand what van ramp length you need to safely load your equipment.
This guide covers the key questions asked by customers and looks at what you should check prior to purchasing a van ramp.

When Are Van Ramps Used?
- Van loading ramps are used across a range of different industries, including on electric vans, below following list includes a few examples.
- Healthcare sector - Safely load healthcare equipment including hospital beds, mobility scooters and more in and out of vans.
- Mobile engineers - Load parts and equipment in and out of vehicles.
- Facility and professional services - Load cleaning machines and equipment.
- Couriers - Load heavier items such as sofas, washing machines and other domestic appliances.
- Events industry - Safely load flightcases filled with speakers, instruments and more - especially beneficial to prevent damage to expensive equipment.
- Landscape gardeners - Transporting ride-on mowers, lawnmowers and pressure washers.
Which Van Ramp Length Do I Need?
- EU guidelines recommend a maximum gradient of 30% or 1:3.3. To identify the minimum ramp length you need measure the vertical height from the ground to where the ramp will rest, this is your load height. Multiply the height by 3.33 to identify the minimum ramp length needed.
- For ease, all of our van ramps state the minimum and maximum height the ramp can be used at.
- Please note, if you are loading an item with low ground clearance, such as pallet trucks, scissor lifts, forklifts and similar, a smoother gradient will be required. We can custom cut the ramp to provide a smoother gradient, please contact our team for a quote.
Which Vehicles Can A Van Ramp Be Used On?
- Our van ramps are designed to be compatible with all vehicle types.
- As standard our ramps have a rest on connection which is designed to be used on flat-bed vehicles like transit vans, Mercedes-Benz Sprinters, Ford Transit Vans, flat-bed trailers and more. The premium van ramps can be provided with alternative connection options such as a hook or bottom-hook connection to allow you to securely connect the ramp to a beaver tail trailer.
Portable vs. Fixed Van Ramps
- Your need to consider what you are loading and how often you will be using the ramp.
- For occasional use or use on multiple vehicles, portable ramps are a popular solution and often much cheaper than fixed van ramps. Available in folding and non-folding solutions, they are often perfect for moving furniture, motorbikes and loading events equipment. It is of course important to consider your abilities and, for workplaces, manual handling regulations, to ensure the portable ramp is not too heavy to lift, especially when being lifted by just one person.
- Fixed, or mounted vehicle ramps are generally secured to the van floor. They can feature a swivel feature to allow you to move them out of the way. They are generally best suited to those who need to use the ramp regularly and those seeking to load mobility scooters. They are quick and easy to deploy and, due to the gas struts, they are much lighter to operate. They are more expensive than portable ramps and are permanently located in the van.
Portable Van Ramps
- Simply rest on the vehicle when needed
- No installation required
- Ideal for occasional use
- Use on various vans, perfect for those renting vans
- Low-maintenance
- Available in higher capacities

Fixed Van Ramps
- 2-part and 3-part solutions
- Bolted to the vehicle
- Ideal for regular use
- Gas-strut assisted making it lighter and easy to move
- Crash-tested solutions
- More expensive than portable solutions

What To Measure
Measure the vertical height from the ground to where the end of the ramp will rest when in place.
Check the weight of the item you are loading.
Check the width of the item and ensure it will fit in the usable width of the ramp.
Additional Considerations
For loading motorbikes, quad bikes, ride-on mowers and similar a single ramp or pair of ramps is generally more suitable and a lighter option rather than one wide ramp.
If you wish to load items with low clearance, such as pallet trucks, you will need to check the maximum gradient it can climb.
Some ramps have a minimum tyre/wheel width required or are only suitable for rubber wheels - check the ramp is suitable for what you are loading.
